Terry Pratchett

December 12th, 2007 by Cecilie | 2 Comments | Filed in Books, News

One of my favorite authors of all times, Terry Pratchett (author of the Discworld books), has some bad news.
Read his letter here.

Summary: Has been diagnosed with early onset alzheimer, but isn’t dead yet…

The letter, even though it’s sad, makes me chuckle a little, he’s such a good writer! And funny!

For me personally the Discworld books has a very special place in my history. The first time I spoke to my sweetie it was because he was reading Witches abroad, I commented on his excellent choice of reading material and we started talking (also called praising pratchett). That’s two and half years ago and we’re still together. The Discworld books are excellent in that respect, if someone likes the books and reads all of them as soon as they get their grubby little hands on them, they are usually worth keeping. Those that read one book and dosen’t get it… or even worse, those that don’t even want to try… let’s just call them wankers.

So, don’t be a wanker, go and read some excellent books today!

If you’re on Ravelry I also recomend checking out the Ankh Morpork knitters group.

Excessive coffee drinking

December 4th, 2007 by Cecilie | No Comments | Filed in Random

I’m drinking way too much coffee today, while trying to write something sensible about why libraries and bookshops should/shouldn’t be considered partners. 2 pages long. And that’s it, all I’m allowed to write. I need about 10 more pages to even start making a good argument about the case… sigh.
The face cup aka a coffee cup
Shouldn’t the exam that gives me half of this semesters point be over more than 2 pages?

So, in honor of me drinking way too much coffee, here’s a picture of my favorite coffee mug at the moment.

(I know, I’m the most interesting person alive).

Book haul

November 18th, 2007 by Cecilie | No Comments | Filed in Books, vegan

I’m a bookish kind of girl. So that I today spent 50 GBP (quids? I have a lousy lapotop keyboard without the pound sign) on books.

I’m turning into a cookbook whore! The problem is just that I find that vegan cooking is so much fun! I enjoy it, I never used to enjoy cooking before and now I love doing it. And being an obsessive researcher I get books on the subject

Dewey

November 6th, 2007 by Cecilie | No Comments | Filed in Random

I spent a good portion of today doing homework.
Dewey books

As I’ve mentioned before I’m in school, studying to become a librarian. This apparently means that all our books need to be huge, about 1000 pages each. The main problem with this is the fact that I cannot take them with me home, I’ve tried and it took some time for my back to heal
Well.. Not really, I just don’t see the point in carrying them around town.

I love the class (Classification) I did this for. We’re working on the Dewey Decimal Classification system at the moment, and constructing the numbers for books/documents feels like solving puzzles. We get one clue, the title of a book (non-fiction) and then try to find the right number for it. Logical but obscure work. And a bit more fun to work on than MARC-records, which is a pretty anti-intuitive system based on how books were recorded before we started using computers. But that’s a rant I’ll save for another day…

No sheep for you and VeganFreak

November 4th, 2007 by Cecilie | No Comments | Filed in Books, Knitting, vegan

Two books I’m reading right now

nosheep2.jpg
No Sheep for You is a great book all about knitting with non-animal products. It does include silk, so the book isn’t completely vegan. But it does contain a lot of information on how and why different yarns behave like they do. And when a pattern calls for wool, this book gives you a lot of help picking the best alternative. Be it soy, cotton, hemp or synthetics.

The book even takes it a step longer, and not only tells you, but gives you an example. The editor of the book (Amy Singer) has said that she tried to show that everything you do with animal fibers, you can do without them as well, except felting…

For me right now, the only problem with the book is that it makes me want to spend lots of money on yarn, so that I can knit some of the projects. I am knitting the tuscany shawl out if it already…

Vegan Freak
Vegan Freak: being vegan in a non-vegan world is basically a book about how you can be vegan without losing your marbles. It talks very briefly about why you need to be vegan, and the rest is tips about how to interact with friends and family, the world, shopping and some other stuff.

I haven’t finished the book yet, but so far I really like it. The things I’ve learned so far are mostly stuff the people around me are going to benefit from, not me though. Because it forced me think about not being to preachy. I know I have preached a little about veganism on my blog lately, but that’s why I have a blog, here I talk about stuff to get them out of my system

The podcast the authors of this book produces is great as well, and I recommend it highly. It’s what made me seriously consider cutting out the crap and go vegan instead of vegetarian.
