Bird and Moon

July 20th, 2008 by Cecilie | No Comments | Filed in Books

Among my favourite comics (although I hesitate to use that word, it doesn’t convey how beautiful this work is) I now have to count the free online one Bird and Moon. It’s a poetic cartoon/picture series about birds.

When you’ve read it (you should) check out her (the artist: Rosemary Mosco) other works as well. Especially “Parts of the bird” and “Ruffed grouse love“. The latter is exactly what I’ve always imagined that birds really sing to each other, well, that and in the case of the small songbirds outside my window in the spring “central apartment, two bedrooms, close to public transits!” in a typical newspaper style :)

Swappy time

January 18th, 2008 by Cecilie | 1 Comment | Filed in Books, Random, Vegan

I love participating in swaps :)
Rigth now it’s a Vegan post-holiday swap, over at the group Vegan knitters and crocheters at ravelry. The swap was a great idea, and the fact that ravelry exists makes it so much easier to join something like that.

I haven’t sent mine yet, but I hope to do it in a couple of days. I went a bit overboard with yarn shopping for my partner, and tomorrow I’m off to get some cheezly and stuff like that for her. I’m extra motivated to do compose a good package now, after I got mine today *squeee*

Vegan swap
Organic cotton yarn

When I got home today I checked the mail, a nd the second I opened it, a nice smell started drifting out of the postbox, not strong, but really nice. And in my joy I discovered a package, for ME!
I ran in and tore it open, and inside I found

  • Blue Sky Alpacas Dyed Cotton (organic) that I’ve wanted to try for a long time, I prefer stroking this yarn over any other I’ve stroked so far
  • a bag of loose tea, with bits of fruit in it
  • a 101 Vegan book in swedish, with recipes, looks cool/fun/educational
  • a bar of Lush soap in peppermint, the thing that smelled so good
  • A handmade sock-bag, with the words “I knit socks” embroiderd on it, lined and in a lovely floral fabric
  • Small bags of a nutty spread
  • a cute pen with fruits on it
  • and Blue candy! I love blue candy!
  • and a sweet letter
    1. Malinmerino, that sent me this, is awesome. Words fail me when I try to say how much I digg this package, you really hit the spot with this one. It made my week

Terry Pratchett

December 12th, 2007 by Cecilie | 2 Comments | Filed in Books, News

One of my favorite authors of all times, Terry Pratchett (author of the Discworld books), has some bad news.
Read his letter here.

Summary: Has been diagnosed with early onset alzheimer, but isn’t dead yet…

The letter, even though it’s sad, makes me chuckle a little, he’s such a good writer! And funny!

For me personally the Discworld books has a very special place in my history. The first time I spoke to my sweetie it was because he was reading Witches abroad, I commented on his excellent choice of reading material and we started talking (also called praising pratchett). That’s two and half years ago and we’re still together. The Discworld books are excellent in that respect, if someone likes the books and reads all of them as soon as they get their grubby little hands on them, they are usually worth keeping. Those that read one book and dosen’t get it… or even worse, those that don’t even want to try… let’s just call them wankers.

So, don’t be a wanker, go and read some excellent books today!

If you’re on Ravelry I also recomend checking out the Ankh Morpork knitters group.

Book haul

November 18th, 2007 by Cecilie | No Comments | Filed in Books, Vegan

I’m a bookish kind of girl. So that I today spent 50 GBP (quids? I have a lousy lapotop keyboard without the pound sign) on books.

I’m turning into a cookbook whore! The problem is just that I find that vegan cooking is so much fun! I enjoy it, I never used to enjoy cooking before and now I love doing it. And being an obsessive researcher I get books on the subject

Waiting for “Making a killing”

November 8th, 2007 by Cecilie | No Comments | Filed in Books, Vegan

Bob Torres’ new book “Making a killing” is out now. He’s one of the authours of a book I just finished reading “Veganfreak” and a part of the podcast duo over at Veganfreak radio podcast.

He and Jenna over at the podcast makes a really good show, the kind I enjoy listening to, and I recomend it to everyone, even if you just want to check out what all the crazy vegan stuff is about.

The new book, which I’m ordering in a day or two, is for the people on the left (politically) and for animal rights people alike. The companion site to the book probably talks about why you should read this a lot better than I can before I have the chance to pick it up. But as I see it, it’s talking about issues that really needs to be talked about.
Animal Rights questions and the way capital controls our world is soo deeply interlinked that any movement that dosen’t consider both of them, is a weaker movement by far.

Every form of suppersion is related, this is pretty evident when you start to read books on topics such as feminism, capitalism, war, propaganda, poverty and social justice. If you start questioning one you have a hard time not going further. And the way I see it, if you want to change the world you need to get the big picture, if not your going to be less effective as well as actually harming the causes your working for. I’ll rant about this more in a day or two. Right now I’ll just recomend that you go and check out the book, or at least the podcast. Ok? Give it a try, you might just challange some views, or at least consider some new ideas.
Challanging yourself is almost as good for you as spinach ;)
