Belated tuscany

October 30th, 2007 by Cecilie | No Comments | Filed in Knitting

Life has had me going/doing way to many/much places/things.

That’s why my pictures of the Tuscany shawl I started when Amy Singer was teaching a class here in Oslo(!)
In the picture the shawl kind of looks like it does in real life, color wise. Not really, but sort off (yay Photoshop!).

I met Theresa at the class as well, and got to praise her a little for her tutorials at knitty. Meeting her reminded me that I needed finish up the fuzzy feet I had put in hibernation. I haven’t finished the pair yet, but now I’m working on it

Going Vegan

October 18th, 2007 by Cecilie | No Comments | Filed in Vegan

People keep asking me why I’m going vegan.
It’s actually a hard question to answer without getting too preachy or going on a long rant. So I’m doing that here instead.

I’ve been sort of vegetarian for years; I quit eating mammals but not fish. For ethical reasons. I’ve seen pictures and read some books (like Animal Liberation).
A friend I had growing up was vegetarian, with her entire family, so I always knew of the possibility. And I loved their food! It tasted so much better than the one I was getting at home.

Being that kind of half-assed vegetarian wasn’t hard. It wasn’t hard giving up fish later on either.
Something I did after I started reading up on the fact that humanity is over fishing every single sea on the planet. Fishing has become an industry very few people actually benefit from; a couple of large ships (trawlers) basically vacuum the seas.

I have been exposed to some vegans in the last couple of years, not all of them nice people, but healthy. I’ve read up on enough nutritional advice on vegetarianism to know how little the human body needs meat (of any kind). The same sources talk about milk and eggs like stuff you can eat if you want to but advices you to get what they contain of nutrition elsewhere as well.
Want calcium? Eat some broccoli or almonds. Protein? I actually get almost too much protein in my diet right now, (beans, fruits, nuts… orange juice).

The ethical side of this is another cup of tea.
Watch Earthlings. Then we can talk about ethics.

Geeky Crochet

October 10th, 2007 by Cecilie | No Comments | Filed in Random

There has been a discussion on Ravelry about geeky crafting, and this thing came up.
It’s advanced math, to such a degree that I cannot say that I really get it, just reading about it.

But I could make a model of the hyperbolic plane they talked about.
I think I need to give out some more links.
ScienceNews. Exploriatorium (scroll a little bit down). Discovermagazine.

Patterns for this task: Knit. Crochet (excelent page, and the pattern I used).

The pattern I used was actually very easy to understand, and even I find it fun to play with.
I only spent a couple of hours making it, so it’s small, about the size of a mandarin.

The yarn was leftovers from the Thermal (FO pics will come soon). And a 3mm crochet hook.

Riots in Denmark?

October 7th, 2007 by Cecilie | No Comments | Filed in News

(Links in italics will be to Danish/Norwegian sites, but as the video footage on this pages are very good, I still recommend that you check them out)

Saturday 6th of October there was another fight in Denmark.

A group of radical youths (between 3000-6000 people, the police gives the lowest number, the news stations say 4-5000 and other sources says 5-6000) held a peaceful demonstration. One bottle was smashed, and others immediately told off the person responsible for this in the march.
As this was a peaceful march several children were present.

The police on the other hand showed up in complete riot outfit, batons, dogs and large amount of teargas. All of this was used at the slightest provocation.

Read the blow by blow account here in english/danish.

I think this is terrible, all they wanted was to get a fucking house! The house is large, owned by the state and has not been in use for 13 years.

This a part of a longer fight the youth house has had going on, G13 is the new name for the people that used the old building harboured. I think we’re going to hear more from them…

KIP’ing

October 4th, 2007 by Cecilie | No Comments | Filed in Knitting

I was knitting on my sock today while I waiting for the train to take me home after a long day, listening to a podcast and minding my own stuff.

A woman taps me on the shoulder “excuse me, the sock you are knitting, aren’t you knitting it in the wrong direction? How do you do that?”
I talked to her about it, just a little bit, at first, how I found stuff like that online.

She was so nice! And just as obsessed with knitting as me, and sooo happy when I gave her the directions to get a pattern like that!
Great!
So we talked until the train got there and both left smiling.

Stuff like that makes me want to knit in public more often
